Title - This is the Army Starring - George Murphy, Kate Smith, Juan Leslie, George Tobias, Alan Hale, Ruth Donnelly, Frances Langford Directed by - Michael Curtiz Producer(s) - Jack L. Warner Screenwriter(s) - Casey Robinson, Capt. Claude Binyon Music by - Irving Berlin
Review
Fans of war time movies you will surely love this film. During World War I, dancer Jerry Jones hosts an all-soldier show on Broadway, called "Yip Yip Yaphank." He becomes a producer after he was wounded in the war. Years later, his son Johnny Jones, stages a new similar show during World War II called "This is the Army."
Music and film fans alike will be mesmerized by both the story and music in this film. Like many films of the era, it is a masterpiece of war time propaganda, beautifully showcasing the world at the time. Produced as a morale booster during the war, much of the theme of the film may still be seen as ringing true today.
Big name stars, including the a young man who would eventually become President, form the wonderful and unique cast while real U.S. soldiers of the day fill out the musical ensemble. This is a film any musical, flag-waving patriot will enjoy seeing time and time again.
As an interesting side note, the composer of much of the music for this film, received the Medal of Merit.

Title - Savage Journey Starring - Maurice Grandmaison, Charles Moll (aka Richard Moll), Faith Clift, Terrance Gehr, Robin Russell, John Mason Directed by - Tom McGowan Producer(s) - David Yeaman, Philip Yordan Screenwriter(s) - Philip Yordan
Review
History buffs will love this film, which details the founding of the Mormon church and their trek across the country in order to eventually found the state of Utah. Richard Moll (under the aka Charles Moll) is cast as Joseph Smith, the founder of the church, and does an extremely credible job in that role, although this is a somewhat different role than most are accustomed to seeing him in. (Probably most notably as Bull Shannon, the bailiff on TV's "Night Court".)
It provides a nice change of pace; however. His portrayal of Smith is right on the money, according to historical accounts of the church founder. Several issues that the early Mormons faced are addressed head-on in the film including the early persecution of the church as well as the subject of polygamy.
While the film was created on a low budget it provides a solid, well crafted portrayal. All in all, this is an excellent film, highlighted by a strong story line, excellent characterization and an in-depth portrayal of the early founding of the Mormon church.
This could have been classified as a Western, but that was just the historical context. Besides, the drama of a potential Mormon president loomed large recently.

Title - The Master Touch Starring - Kirk Douglas, Guiliano Gemma, Florinda Bolkam, Rene Doldehoff, Romano Puppo, Wolfgang Preiss Directed by - Michele Lupo Producer(s) - Mirnia Cicogna Screenwriter(s) - Mino Roll, Nico Duool, Michele Lupo
Review
Heist film fans will relish this film. While the film was produced on a low budget, you would never know it by the well developed fight scenes that are threaded throughout the film. Starring Kirk Douglas, who provides an excellent performance as an over the hill thief itching to pull one last good score, this is a film you won’t want to miss.
The car chase in the film is one that absolutely should not be missed. Unlike modern car chases, which are frequently handled through special effects, the car chase in this film really does seem to have a master touch and could very well be one of the best car chases ever recorded on film. Compares favorably to "Bullit" and "The French Connection" chases.
Twists and turns throughout the plot will keep you held on the edge of your seat as the characters work to pull off one of the biggest heists ever (this is pre-"Oceans", of course). Fraught with suspense and action, this film will quickly become one of your all time favorites.

Title - Cape Town Affair Starring - Claire Trevor, James Brolin, Jacqueline Bisset, Bob Courtney, John Whiteley, Gordon Mulholland Directed by - Robert D. Webb Producer(s) - Robert D. Webb Screenwriter(s) - Harold Medford, Samuel Fuller
Review
Starring James Brolin and Jacqueline Bisset (this name is vaguely familiar to me, famous even in outer space), this is a film you will fall in love with (well I liked it). The plot revolves around South African secret agents who are attemptint to save confidential microfilm before it can fall into the wrong hands; in this case, the Communists.
Much of the delight of this film encompasses the numerous gorgeous shots of Capetown as well as Table Mountain. This is an excellent opportunity to see what Capetown actually looked like in the late 60’s as the film was shot largely on location. Many of the scenes were shot in locations in and around Capetown that were unmodified; providing an in-depth and unaltered view of how the area looked during this important point in history.
Jacqueline Bisset and James Brolin fans will also relish the opportunity to view them in their early prime. How about that, this is a remake of Richard Widmark's "Pickup on South Street" made 14 years earlier. His co-star (Thelma Ritter) in that one received an Oscar nomination for best supporting actress. Wish I could get a copy of that for you.
